Our talented cultural group showcased the finest of Benin royal dance, traditional music, and magnificent coral bead attire at this year's West Yorkshire Heritage Showcase — receiving a standing ovation from the audience.
The West Yorkshire Heritage Festival 2024 welcomed cultural groups from across the region, but few left as lasting an impression as the Edo Cultural Troupe of Edo Union Leeds. Dressed in stunning traditional Benin royal attire — complete with coral beads, ivory accessories, and ceremonial fans — the troupe captivated an audience of over 500 spectators.
The Performance
The troupe performed three distinct segments: the Igue royal thanksgiving dance, a traditional Benin warrior victory dance, and a contemporary fusion piece incorporating modern afrobeat with ancestral rhythms. Each segment was accompanied by live percussion — including the ema drum and ugie flute — performed by musicians from within the community.

Standing Ovation & Recognition
The performance concluded to a standing ovation and was later featured in the Leeds Cultural Review as one of the highlights of the 2024 festival. The troupe was personally congratulated by the Festival Director and invited to perform at the 2025 Yorkshire Multicultural Arts Gala.
