Bridlington Summer Beach Picnic: A Day of Unity, Food & Ocean Breezes

Over 70 members and their families spent a sun-filled day at Bridlington's stunning seafront — enjoying traditional Edo food, beach games, group portraits, and the kind of laughter that only a close-knit diaspora community can share.

On a warm summer morning, a convoy of cars departed Leeds heading eastward to the beautiful seaside town of Bridlington. Inside were over 70 excited members of Edo Union Leeds — parents, children, grandparents — all heading for a day of sun, community, and celebration.

Arriving at the Seafront

The group set up on the sandy beach near the promenade, unloading coolers packed with homemade jollof rice, suya, chin-chin, and drinks. Children ran straight for the waves while elders found shady spots and began catching up over cups of tea.

"I've been a member for 6 years and this is still my favourite event every year. Something about the sea and the community together — it's healing." — Senior Member, Edo Union Leeds

Games, Group Photos & Great Food

  • Beach volleyball tournament (Team Lagos vs Team Benin)
  • Children's sandcastle competition with prizes
  • Community group photograph on the shoreline
  • Traditional food sharing — banga rice, suya & chin-chin
  • Evening walk along Bridlington Promenade

As the sun set over the North Sea, the group gathered for a final prayer of thanksgiving and community blessing before making the journey home. Smiles, tired children, and full bellies were the order of the evening. The Bridlington Beach Picnic remains one of the most beloved annual events in the Edo Union Leeds calendar.
